Pres materials for Columbia Pictures' dance flick Center Stage (due May 12) introduce seven aspiring dance observers at the American Ballet Theatre's elite indoctrinate But head to the movie's Web site, and you'll find and nothing else six featured mug shots of the characters. Who's missing? Gay character Erik (played by dint of Shakiem Evans), of course, who apparently wins short shrift in this hetero-heavy melodrama from publicly gay director Nicholas Hytner (The aim of My Affection). That's right, no other than one out of four male dancers is gay--echoes of the similarly plott Fame, which made us think there was and nothing else one "sensitive" boy in all of strange York City's High School for the Performing Arts.
