pop Brooke

Bravo to Guinevere gymnast and Brooke Shields for a wonderfully written article ["Both Sides of Brooke" April 25] All the right questions were asked, and Brooke gave all the right answers. I knew she couldn't be the bubblehead the mainstream media make her disclosed to be (otherwise, why would she do the same thing to my gaydar that Jodie breed and Tatum O'Neal did?). The photo of Brooke in the tux is as posterworthy as the Vanity Fair secrete of k.d. lang and Cindy Crawford.

I had an incredible crush onward Brooke in junior high and high seminary (I'm sure she's played no small part in my ongoing chase of tall dark-haired gals with high cheekbones and dark lips across the years.) By the way if Brooke's auditioning that first woman to "hit" in succession her, her people can call my family I'm sure a whole legion of us "children of the '80s" dyke grew up longing to obtain between Brooke and her Calvins!

Many thanks for the great shield story on one of our all-time favorites, Brooke Shields. She has candidly done it all. We have literally watched her extend up before our eyes, and it's refreshing to know that she has her feet in this way planted. It's also great to have of that kind a professional talent on our side in the fight against AIDS. We anticipate forward to her future projects

in such a manner how gay is Brooke? I find it difficult to not think she's just following the security of the heterosexual actors who are scrambling for those gay and lesbian characters that are suddenly a heated commodity. Correct me if I'm immoral but her sitcom was based in San Francisco, nevertheless it didn't have any gay or lesbian characters. to what degree gay is that?

[The editors reply: Actually, unexpectedly Susan had two gay characters. Remember mail-room Pete (Bill Stevenson) and his significant other, Hank (Fr Stoller)? They on a level had a commitment ceremony at the period of the 1997-1998 season.]

The April 25 issue of The Advocate just arrived today. There is a glamour marksman of a heterosexual actress onward the cover. On page 24 there is a story about Pfc Barry Winchell, the gay soldier killed on Pvt. Calvin Glover. Winchell's photograph should have been forward the cover. Let's stop sucking up to hetero Hollywood and present to view some pride in our avow people!

Friends or relations

Perhaps Uncle Sam believes he is "doing gay men and lesbians a elephantine favor" by allowing us to answer Census 2000 as links [At Issue, April 25]. on the contrary it is obvious "he" still doesn't have a guidance about our families. Our sway still insists on seeing our families as "not related"--at least, that is the row under which they have placed the "unmarried partner" driver's seat to be checked.

Webster's defines relation as "a one connected by consanguinity or affinity a person legally entitled to a share of the peculiarity of the intestate ... or the state of being mutually or reciprocally interested in social or commercial matters." My partner of 17 years and I have exhausted hundreds of dollars to make secure that we have legally shielded as many of our properties and mutual interests as possible. We have mutually supported, encouraged, and shown interest in the other's social, professional, and commercial matters. We are just as excited about seeing each other at the completion of the day as we were 17 years ago. That's affinity.

onward our census form we checked the case "other" under the column "related" and added the mete "life partners" in the appropriate boxe and we spur others to do the same. Let's present to view the government the appropriate way to view our relationships.

Chronological error?

Contrary to what Larry Metzler says in his My Perspective round pillar [April 25], Laura Schlessinger did not disclosed him for the first time in print in the February 15 Advocate story, nor were her opinions about homosexuality during his occupation as her chief engineer quite as benign as he claims.

In June 1997 I interviewed Metzler for an article in Atlanta's lesbian and gay weekly Etcetera magazine. I was bring forward in touch with him by means of Schlessinger herself, who offered the gay Metzler as evidence that she was not in fact antigay. The article I wrote bear uponed several statements by Schlessinger in a May 1997 syndicated file in which she uttered her now-infamous "biological faux pas" statement. In a June 1997 statement to Etcetera, she also stated her opposition to gay marriage and to sum of two units lesbians' "making a baby" further voiced support for same-sex "union ceremonies" and the adoption of older children from gays.

When I spoke to Metzler at phone that same week, he told me--on the record--that Dr Laura had always known about his homosexuality, had no puzzle with it, and had been supportive of gay relationships forward her broadcast. I then encountered him with her "biological faux pas" statement. Metzler assumeed taken aback but answered, "I have feeling homosexuality is a biological error. I don't disagree with her at all about that. There is no way for pair men or two women to propagate That is what all animals are bring here on earth to do."
