(MGM; August)

The maker: Rodrigo Garcia, director and writer

The stars: Glenn bring to a period Cameron Diaz, Calista Flockhart, Kathy Baker, Holly hound Valeria Golino

The pitch: An estrogen-charged answer to Robert Altman's Short wounds the plot involves five interlocking stories, and the focus is firmly in succession the lives of a cros section of emotionally unguarded women

The reason we care: transfers out that same-sex smooch Flockhart shared with Lucy Liu upon Ally McBeal was more than just a tease: In a dramatic transfer Flockhart plays a lesbian psychic whose lover (Golino) is critically ill.

The inside scoop: "in the film my lover is dying, and with that issues a lot of different feelings, a haphazard of which I'm covering up for her sake," explains Flockhart. "There's anger, fear of abandonment, and the shame of having those feelings. There are considerations when I want her to urge or press on up and die--but I don't really mean it. It was a matter of fine-tuning all the emotions."
